How long do you spend bouncing around streaming services before you find something to watch? If it’s more than a few minutes, the Silver Screen Newsletter is designed for you. We will be launching the newsletter in January 2023 and hope that it will help you never miss a weekly movie night again.
Our focus, as always here at No Place Like the Movies, is centered on film history and appreciation which means I will not be peddling the latest blockbuster or super-hero franchise (though those films have their place as well). Instead, weekly recommendations will focus on films, directors, and actors who have come to occupy a special place in our culture and film history. Essentially we are a love letter littered with reasons why we love movies in the first place — the iconic moments, the crackling dialogue and come-backs, images that last the test of time and become larger than themselves.
Movies touch our hearts and awaken our vision, and change the way we see things. They take us to other places, they open doors and minds. Movies are the memories of our life time, we need to keep them alive.
Martin Scorsese
My hope is to in some small way keep movies and film history alive. Perhaps you’ll join me on this journey. Perhaps you appreciate the idea of lost beauty or forgotten brilliance. Whether it is watching something we haven’t seen before or re-watching a movie from our childhood or before we were even born, there is a magic in what movies capture about our world and a magic about what they can do in our lives. Now I’m starting to get overly sappy–if you just want a weekly movie recommendation, you’ll have it. If you want to learn a bit more about Hollywood, film history, and behind-the-scenes stories, you’ll have that too. But my greatest hope is that you discover something you love, whatever movie it is, and tell us about it.
You can find a link to the Silver Screen Newsletter or follow us on your regular social media platforms once we get those launched (sorry, we only have so much time in between watching all these movies).
For other film-related writing and projects (such as our Year with Oscar project where I watch all 95 Best Picture Oscar winners in 2022), you can follow us here at No Place Like the Movies.
